Poverty Line: Hundreds Queue for Free Bread in Romania

It’s still long before sunrise when hundreds of poor Romanian pensioners in Bucharest line up for the two free loaves of bread given three times a week by a local charity. The two loaves may be worth less than a dollar, but they still mean a lot to the poorest pensioners, who receive less than 100 dollars a month from the state, after decades of work.

The charity also provides bread for pensioners outside of Bucharest, two times a week. Charity representatives claim that the poverty queue has thickened since Romania’s authorities adopted austerity measures, at the request of the IMF.
