Russia and Romania – World’s Biggest Suppliers of Human Guinea Pigs

Multinational pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies run most of their tests on humans in Russia and Romania, it is revealed in a study conducted by Vanity Fair. Since the year 2000, more than 1500 such tests were conducted in Russia, while the number of tests run in Romania nears 900. According to Vanity Fair, pharmaceutical companies seek people who are poor and most times illiterate – proof of that is the fact that, many times, the signature on the agreement forms is a fingerprint or an X. Other countries that have been targeted by pharmaceutical companies seeking voluntary human subjects for tests are Thailand, Turkey, Peru, Iran, Uganda, Bangladesh, Malawi and Kazakhstan.
